Adult ADHD often unrecognized by family doctors

The survey also revealed that family doctors have a more active role in the treatment of adults with ADHD, when there are matters that are discussed.ADHD affects about 8 million American adults and can lead to increased health care costs, increased divorce rates, unemployment and motor vehicle accidents. However, most
patients are not diagnosed, with only one quarter, medical aid to the impairment associated with ADHD. Even patients who seek help, often identified with ADHD Arent. The results tell us that we need a better job to support family physicians who are on the front of the diagnosis of ADHD, said Lena Adler, M.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Neurology at New York University School of Medicine.The disease causes serious problems for millions of adults and even their physicians, including internists and family physicians, often overlooked. A new tool for assessing symptoms of adult ADHD self-report scale (ASRS), may assist physicians in evaluating symptoms of ADHD. Mr. Adler and other ADHD experts, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, developed
the ASRS. Key survey results * Nearly half (48 percent) of 400 family physicians surveyed are not confident in diagnosing ADHD in adults.* Only 34 percent of family physicians report very knowledgeable and extremely knowledge ADHD compared with 92 percent who said the same thing for depression and 83 percent for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). * Sixty-four percent of respondents said they were not at all or not
