The doctor is in: UH engineering students find medical mentors

In a joint effort with the Methodist Hospital (TMH) in the Texas Medical Center, University of Houston in Biomedical Engineering students gain exposure to career opportunities in the medical field. Initiated by Dr. Mike Lieberman, director of the Methodist Hospital Research Institute, this program provides summer internships for students in biomedical engineering, each of which a mentor and receive a stipend of $ 5,000. In his first year, the program allows students to take a participatory role in their research mentor, covering topics such as hematopathology dealing with blood diseases, neurointerventional radiology, diseases of the vascular radiology and the central nervous system is devoted to Endovascular such as arteries and veins from the inside .
This summer, internsKenalog usawork in the laboratories of pathologists, neurologists, radiologists, cardiologists and neurosurgeons. The programs of the eight participants, five students UH - David Wallace-Bradley, Eugene Chaung, Nilou Ebrahimi, David and Alina Raza Panthagani. Ive always been interested in medicine, radiology, endovascular, but it was something he said hadnt been exposed Ebrahimi. The best part of this is familiar with the different areas of biomedical engineering. All students now see that there are many different areas can come and continue to use our technical expertise to solve problems.
Moreover, what the student can be placed directly into the classroom in their respective laboratories TMH learning. Matthew Franchek, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of theKenalog usaBiomedical Engineering program at UHS, compared to be enrolled with a complementary learning at two universities. In our biomedical engineering program, the goal is student-oriented experience, and thats what they did, said Franchek. At UH, students are learning the engineering sciences, life sciences and mathematics.Methodist is named in its context and to teach medical science.
