UK Health Secretary responds to Health Select Committee Report on Obesity

In response to the report of the Health Select Committee on obesity, said Health Secretary John Reid: We share the concern to the committee of the seriousness of the health consequences of obesity. And one of the key issues to be addressed in our White Paper on public health later this year. We realize that these problems not only for the government - that affect individuals and their choices, and the food and leisure. However, we in the Department of Health are working closely with colleagues across government, including education, culture, media and sport, transport, promotion of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the Food Standards Agency, and allow people to eat more nutritious food and sport.We created a cross-Government committee under my chairmanship of theKenalog usaGovernment to continue its work forward and to address broader issues of public health.
We will consider the recommendations of this report with care and is a valuable contribution to the consultation process we use to communicate our White Paper. Were aware of this report may stimulate debate and ensure that everyone can express their opinions, we have extended the consultation period, originally scheduled to end in late May, a month until the end of June.
